Geography teaching and learning at Fairfields encompasses skills that we hope will increase our pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Our aim through our teaching is to enable our pupils to want to look after the environment they live in and its resources by developing respect and understanding for the world we live in. We also hope that the children of Fairfields will begin to develop respect and interest in all people throughout the world regardless of culture, race or religion. We aim to develop every child’s sense of wonder about the world and create a sense of responsibility. This can only be done when the teaching of geography skills cover aspects of life that are relevant and meaningful to the children that we teach.
In the early years, children begin their geographical learning by comparing similarities and differences in relation to places around the world. At Fairfields, the children are given opportunities to compare where they live to countries that are hot and countries that are cold around the world through the topic of My Home Your Home. The children talk about their immediate environment noticing patterns and change. Geographical skills are introduced through the use of simple map work and identifying areas of relevance to life at school and home.
In Key Stage 1 children are taught to name and locate the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas as well as the world’s five oceans and seven continents using a wide range of world maps, atlases and globes.
The children use the school grounds to help them identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and compare these to an alternative location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles. Key Stage 1 children are taught to understand and discuss geographical similarities and differences by studying the human and physical geography of our local area Cheshunt and a contrasting non-European country.
Children are taught to use locational and directional language like near and far, left and right as well as language relating to compass directions (e.g. North, South, East and West.) This is taught through map work and fieldwork of the school grounds and local area. Children are provided with opportunities to use simple observational skills to study the geography of Fairfields and the surrounding area including the key human and physical features of the environment.

In lower Key Stage 2 the children build upon the locational knowledge learned in Year 1+2 to begin to focus on European countries. Through the study of a region in a European country, children discuss the key physical, human and environmental characteristics.
Children also use fieldwork to observe, measure and record the human and physical features in the local area of Cheshunt using a range of different methods, including sketch maps, graphs, digital technologies and surveys. Classes also look to describe and understand key aspects of physical geography including rivers and the water cycle with links and trips to the local River Lea.

In upper Key Stage 2 locational knowledge is revised and built upon allowing the children to understand and compare how some aspects of these locations have changed over time. Children are taught to develop their understanding of geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region on the United Kingdom including but not exclusive to a study of Clacton as well as a study of a region within North or South America- Brazil.
Children identify the position of latitude, longitude, the Equator, the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including night and day) and their significance.
Key aspects of physical geography taught in upper Key Stage 2 include mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. Key aspects of human geography taught include trade links and the distributions of natural resources.
